Big new around here today - Persy crawled for the first time this morning. The only reason I was home to see it is this weekend's family activity was acquiring the flu so we were all convalescing today.

And since I haven't posted for a while...I will add that Persy was 20 lbs at eight months.

Piper is talking like nobody's business.

Work is busy for both of us.

The New Year is good so far!

Christmas Day Recap

What a beautiful, hectic day...it's been a recession in the Ferry house for a whole year now but things are definitely looking up. I recently added a great new freelance client to my schedule and some other really cool things are happening.

We had a few nice presents picked out for the girls and a nice quiet opening this morning. Then we had a brunch for the whole Ferry clan...yummy food and a TON of presents for the girls, everyone was incredibly generous and thoughtful! In the days to come they will have no shortage of things to play with or wear! At the end of the day the girls and I stayed home, missing the big Christmas dinner but...Persy was out by 4 and Pi was fading by 5:45.

I miss my family and friends up north but we are committed to spending next Christmas up there, I am already counting the days. In the meantime, here is the Annual 'night before Christmas version for you entertainment:

Twas the morning of Christmas and all through the house
Not a creature was sleeping except for my spouse.

The children were wearing their jammies with socks
While Mushy and Joxer kept begging for walks.

The stocking were hung by the living room tree
Where toddlers and doggies couldn’t quite reach.

Mama in her sweatpants and V-necked sweater
Was preparing some food that never looked better.

Out on the lawn there arose such a clatter
Even Eric got out of bed to see what was the matter.

There on a crest of newly mowed lawn
Arriving for the party were Scott, Hunter and Dawn.

When what to his wondering eyes should appear
But the whole Ferry clan arriving here.

Away to the shower he flew like a flash
Turning on the water he stepped in the bath.

Soon the guests were all gathered for grub
While Eric still lathered and sang in the tub.

While Piper played princesses and trains with Will
Eric, the bather, was showering still.

Before the party ended the people were fed
Eric descended with his spiky haired head.

Piper and Persy gave hugs and kisses to all
Then picked up the phone to give Grammy a call.

Mama and Dada exclaimed as the guests turned to go
Merry Christmas to all, next year it might snow.

An actual update

I usually just post pictures of what the kids have been up to but there are so many things these days that aren't being captured in photos.

A quick run down - Piper just turned two. Talks constantly, is obsessed with the Moon, the Sun, princesses, asks for the clothes she wants to wear - tonight asked for the pink pajamas instead of the blue ones. She is a picky eater, happy most of the time but is a master pouter and has selective hearing. She counts to ten avoided five, six and seven completely.

Persy is six month old, is awake all the time, sits well and is nearly crawling. She is very vocal and very, very happy. Persy loves her doggies, her big sister and her daddy (probably me too :) ).

I am still excited by things like...sleeping in until 6:35 this morning...which is two hours later than usual - amazed by these little people and all the adventures they take me on and things they are teaching me.

Persy is recovering from a cold and just might actually sleep through the night...Piper decided to wake up at 1 am and demand a change of clothes and a sippy - weird but okay - changed diaper, put her in yoga pants and a long sleeved onesie instead of her jammies then we headed to the kitchen to get a sippy of milk. Leaving the kitchen we passed the family room with the TV in it.

"Mama, Lazy Town?"

"No, Pi-Pi, it's night night time."

"Barack Obama?" as she reached for the clicker.

"No, Pi-Pi, night night, come on."

Apparently CNN was her idea of a gimme to not have to go to bed...and CNN has gone from being called "Cooper Cooper" to being called "Barack Obama."

She is asleep. I am going back to bed but thought I would share. Good night.

This little girl is smiling because she had a great check-up this week. She had four immunizations - that part she didn't love. She is two feet one inch now and over 16 pounds.

She is going to have her first real food next week...if rice cereal counts as real food.

Friday when I picked Pi up from daycare I discovered she had escaped from her pack and play during naps. Didn't think too much of it until yesterday when she got in and out of bed a few times on her own during the day...and today didn't nap AND ESCAPED from her crib...so we are cutting our losses and converted the crib to a bed so she has less distance to fall...notice who is is actually assembling the bed...

Nectarine/blueberry preserves - had to make four jars, didn't quite have enough to fill them all...still mastering the canning process.

This is from the "not chicken pox" doctor visit a few weeks back. We got to sit in the room - in quarantine essentially for one hour and fifteen minutes. It was great fun.

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

Well at least it has a name now...Persy and I got it on Friday - well, I am sure we "got" it sooner...we manifested it on Friday. After rushing off to the pediatrician (NO repeat emergency room visits please) we got the nearly quintessential "take two aspirin and call me in the morning" from Dr. Chambers...who actually said it was very good to have brought the baby in and to give her tylenol every four hours for three days to keep her fever at bay (is that how you spell that "bay"?).

He also let me know that the sores in her throat and rash on her feet would likely stay around for three days. So we packed up, paid our co-pay and went home. Her temp hadn't been over 99.7 any of the times it had been taken but then Pi's was barely 99 thirty minutes before it spiked to 102 and made her into the blue lipped zombie. Once home I took her temp again, 99.4, gave her tylenol and stuck her in the magic baby swing. Seemed odd to me that her temp was still as low as it was before the tylenol took charge so I took Pi's temp to test the thermometer...98.7...so apparently the thermometer was working. To double check I took my own temp...101.7!!!!! This explained the series of meltdowns I had throughout the day.

The good news is - I know what the baby is complaining about since I am going through it with her. I don't have the rash on my hands and feet but I sure have the sore throat and am very motivated to get her tylenol in her on the dot! Hopefully this is the end of doctor visits and emergency room trips for a few weeks. Persy's four month check up is in two weeks...

Pi's Annual Emergency Room Trip

I was just thinking about last year when Pi fell off our bed in the night and split her forehead on the night stand. It was August 9. There is still a visible scar in her hairline from it. That was scary.

Last night, I picked the girls up from daycare - Pi was really mellow and felt sort of warm. By the time I got home with her she had a 100 degree temp and glassy eyes. Twenty minutes of crying were followed by a zombie like episode, Piper was "awake" but completely unresponsive.

She got worse, started to pass out - my neighbor was over at this point - she told her husband to get the car - she stayed with Persy, her husband drove us to the hospital. We got into the emergency room ahead of forty or so people in the waiting room.

We spent four hours there basically waiting for her fever to come down. The doctors checked her and came up with no diagnosis. We brought her home and she slept really well. Today she is doing well, still mellow, still moderately feverish off and on but doing better.

Persy seems to be just fine. Daycare called at noon to say a second kid there was having the same symptoms. Hurray mommyhood! Fortunately, all seems well so far. There are so many other things going on in the world to worry about but I do wonder what it is about Pi and her annual August trip to the "E Room."

Of note: Piper does NOT have chicken pox, there was a scare that required an $85 doctor visit after hours and an $80 tube of cream. Persy is finally starting to show her personality - she is awake and alert much more of the day - dazzling all with her dimples and her funny coos. Margot is really enjoying her job - working on some really fun new biz proposals. Mushy dog turns 35 in dog years on the 15th - I baked zucchini cornbread muffins in heart shaped tins for the dogs - with a milkbone garnish baked in.

Two month check up

Persy had her two month check up yesterday with Dr. McHotHot (aka Dr. Chambers) - Meme took her and all reports were fantastic - which we already thought!

I am back to work - back in the ad agency biz! I started two weeks ago and am really enjoying myself. The girls are going to a fantastic daycare - Piper's been there for two weeks and loves going to "school" - she has friends her own age and even got her first official birthday party invitation!

Persy was staying home with our neighbor, Sarah, who is becoming our other daughter it would seem. Sarah is great with Persy but is going to work in the fantastic world of retail shoes so Persy is going to join her big sister at daycare starting Monday.

The dogs are the ones I am most concerned about in this transition. Salome has not been home alone for more than a few hours before, I think she will be really sad to not have a person to lie down in the path of.

Today is the Fourth of July - Happy Birthday America - I hope you all are having lots of great food and spending time with people you love!

Persy has her first cold - ah, the milestones...she has a great attitude about it - we went to the doctor on Wednesday and found that she has gained another five ounces and has "advanced" motor skills...getting ready to enroll her in tennis camp for the summer...

Persy finally took a pacifier today, I mean really took it...it's been in for a good ten minutes, life has improved! ;)

Our pediatrician suggested using it to train her to nurse only every two hours instead of every hour and a half.
